How Community Solar Credits Affect Budget Billing with PNM

Updated this week

If you are enrolled in budget billing through PNM (Powering New Mexico, Budget Billing - pnmprod - pnm.com), you will still receive solar credits each month. These credits are applied directly to your bill and will lower the amount you owe under your budget billing plan.

Even though your solar credits are not included when PNM determines your average monthly budget billing amount, they are still applied to your bill each month.

Your subscription charge is based on the full value of the solar credits you receive (at a discounted rate), not the reduced budget billing amount after the credits are applied. Because of this, your subscription charge may sometimes be higher than your budget billing payment.

What does this mean?

Let’s say your budget billing amount is $50 and you receive $75 in solar credits; those credits will first be applied to your utility bill—bringing your balance down to $0.

However, your Community Solar subscription is based on the full value of the solar credits you receive. This means you are billed at a discounted rate (for example, 72%) of the total credit amount—not your reduced budget billing balance.

Because of this, your subscription charge may sometimes be higher than your budget billing amount, even though your overall energy costs are still lower.
